What makes a security cable worth buying

Every DocksLocks security cable is a fully lockable cable built for the outdoors: a flexible, cut-resistant steel core sheathed in weatherproof vinyl and paired with a corrosion-proof lock. That combination of cable and lock loops through wheels, scupper holes, roof racks and hardware to secure your gear to any fixed point. Cheap hardware-store lockable cables fail on the lock first, not the cable, seizing solid after one season near salt water. Ours don't.

Keyed, coiled or straight

Our cable lock with key locks and unlocks fast with no combination to remember, while coiled and straight cables give you the reach you need. Keyed locks are quicker and have no code to forget; resettable combination cable locks mean nothing to carry and easy sharing across a family or a crew. Not sure on length? See our sizing guide.

Can a cable lock be cut?

Any cable can be cut given the right tool and enough time. What matters is whether the tool a thief actually carries can do it in the seconds they have. We wrote the full breakdown in Can Cable Locks Be Cut? What Actually Stops a Thief. If your gear sits unattended overnight or in a high-theft spot, step up to our 8mm cut-proof security chains.

Security cables for retail, rental and marina fleets

Buying more than one or two? Marinas, surf and paddle shops, resorts, rental fleets and municipal docks use the same cables at volume to secure display stock and rental gear. See commercial and retail applications for fleet security cables and volume pricing, or become a dealer to stock DocksLocks.

Heavy Duty and High Security Cable Locks

Our kayak, SUP and gear cables are heavy duty cable locks built on a 10mm braided steel wire cable in marine grade weatherproof steel, sheathed in a vinyl coating that keeps out the elements and will not scratch what it secures. Each comes in 5, 10, 15, 20 or 25ft, straight or coiled, with a key lock, a resettable 4-digit combination lock, or looped ends for your own U-lock, disc lock or padlock. For a higher security cable lock, the looped-end cables are also sold with a short shackle U-lock that adds a 12mm chrome plated hardened steel shackle for extra cut and pry protection.

Built for Marine and Salt-Air Use

DocksLocks security cable locks are built for marine and salt-air use: marine grade weatherproof steel cable, a vinyl outer coating, and, on our key models, a corrosion resistant brass lock core inside a sealed marine grade steel shell with a sand and splash proof keyhole cover. They are made for docks, beaches, boat ramps and marinas as much as the garage.

Security Cable Lock FAQ

Can I use a security cable lock near salt water?

Yes. DocksLocks cables are built for marine and salt-air use. If salt water gets into the locking mechanism, flush it with fresh water and lubricate it to keep it working smoothly.

Should I choose a key or combination cable lock?

A key lock snaps shut to lock and only needs the key to open, with two keys included. A resettable combination lock lets you set your own 4-digit code, so there is nothing to carry and it is easy to share with family or a crew.

How thick is a DocksLocks security cable?

Our kayak, SUP and gear security cables are 10mm thick, and the male end is the same diameter as the cable, so it passes through kayak and paddleboard scupper holes and scooter wheels.
